Today we are moving out of our first apartment together as a couple. It's time to move on to bigger and better things. When we were looking a year ago this time, this building was a good fit for us. I had a long commute already on the Metro so staying close to a stop was ideal. The neighborhood was still pricey but we were able to get 700 square feet for a decent price (by DC standards). However over the past year we have outgrown it with the wedding gifts we have received and with our initial lease ending, the rent was going to go up if we stayed. Plus our little Finn Dog is still shy and the elevators and all the people in our 20 story apartment building make him skittish... it's stressful on everyone. So we decided it was time to move on.
Now that I'm working much much closer to home and have a parking pass, our need for Metro access has disappeared which gave us more options. Apartment hunting in the DC Metro is extremely stressful. We had to give notice in November but yet couldn't really start apartment hunting until December since everything is such a quick turnaround. We did find something in a nice neighborhood pretty quickly. The condo is a little dated and the layout isn't the best but it's double the size of our apartment and we anticipate paying 15% less overall since we won't have to pay for parking or a storage unit or the increased rent. There is a bus that stops right outside our new place that goes straight to work for me if I need it. Plus it has a good sized patio for the Finnster! We are all excited about not having to put shoes and a coat on every time Finn goes out to pee.
We have until next week to get out of the apartment and we will probably spend quite a bit of time here this weekend getting the rest of our stuff out after the movers take the furniture and heavy boxes. But tonight we will be staying in the new place and this little place is now our old apartment.
